Merrimack County Superior Courthouse
Merrimack County Superior Courthouse is 33,000 sf, two story structure sited adjacent to its nineteenth century predecessor between Court and Pitman Streets in the capital city. Designed by C.N. Carley Associates, Architects & Planners along with Cowan Goudreau Architects of Concord, the building includes three courtrooms, a two-story public lobby, administrative, and support spaces.
Design challenges included fitting a demanding program of building and parking on a site with very little room to spare and creating an appropriate public presence for the new courthouse, which is partially obscured by the old one.
The courthouse was developed under a public/private partnership unprecedented for this type of project in New Hampshire. Developer Stephen Duprey led a design/development team including Milestone Engineering and Construction, Inc., which helped to keep the building downtown, completing the project approximately 1 year earlier and for $1,000,000 less than originally estimated.
