Capital Shopping Center
The Capitol shopping center is located on the original site of the grand old Boston and Maine train station.
The new owners of the property recognized this and challenged the architect to give the center a facelift which would identify major entry points, integrate the buildings Architectural materials and shapes back into the context of downtown and provide lighting that supported the architecture and made a statement to the community that the Center was alive, safe and well.
The proposed design would break up the flat linear massing with prominent roof gables, and identify, through architecture the major entry points into the Center. Many of the details such as the standing seam metal roofs, metal column caps, lower band split face block and granite cap, arched window, and the metal work in the Arches all recall detailing found in the original train station.
